Be punctual
Your students will almost all arrive with plenty of time to spare before class, so you better be there at least 15 minutes before it starts. Make sure you dismiss the class on time, too.
Never call your students "old"
The first baby boomers are starting to turn 60, and one boomer turns 50 every 8 seconds. So watch out - here comes the bubble of baby boomer seniors!
As boomers, we never really wanted to grow up, so we certainly are not even considering "getting old". Avoid using language such as "slowing down", "golden years", "elderly", or "aging". "Active adult" is regarded as pretty safe. What is wrong with that, anyhow? That is what you're hoping to accomplish by having them in your yoga class!
Expect many students to be hearing and sight impaired
Medical science continues to improve rapidly, but it is still common for seniors to have lost some acuteness in their hearing and/or eyesight.
Make sure you speak up at all times, even more so than you do in your other classes. If necessary, invest in an inexpensive PA system.
When offering them printed materials such as a class schedule or inspirational handouts, make sure the type is a fairly large. This applies to your web site, if you have one.
Be aware of health problems
Partial loss of hearing and sight is probably the most common thing to watch out for, but there are a lot of other conditions that may present contraindications for particular asanas.
You should always be ready to use props, modify poses, or suggest and alternative pose.
A complete discussion of this subject is a whole other article, but I will say that you should carefully quiz new students about health problems and physical limitations, and always recommend checking with doctor.
Some will be conservative in their manner and dress
Some of your students will wear workout clothes, but others will come to class in casual street clothes that you would not see in most studios. It is not uncommon for them to leave their socks on, and we have seen a few that do not even take off their shoes.
Be especially cautious about doing adjustments least you offend someone.
Liz does not invite them to spread their buttock flesh to make contact with the sits bones - after all, you do not touch that part of your body in public!
Do not say much about the spiritual aspects of yoga
There are some fundamentalist Christians that put forth the idea that yoga is the work of the devil. Liz had one class sabotaged by a woman who insisted that chanting OM was calling the devil. There is not much you can do to change people's minds about this, but you should be aware of this problem.
You also need to think about everything you say in class and decide if that could be misinterpreted as a call to change one's spiritual attitude. Most of your students will have established their religious outlook on life long before they start a chair yoga class. You probably shouldn't talk much about chakras, the Sanskrit names for asanas, awakening Kundlini energy, or any of the more spiritual aspects of yoga when teaching Yoga In Chairs.
Expect students to interrupt class with questions
Most of your chair yoga students will be new to yoga to start out with, and will have lots of questions. They may have health issues to ask about, and they sometimes just "don't get it" the first time around.
Be patient with your students when they interrupt class with a question. Your chair yoga classes simply will not be as solemn as other classes.
Try to stay in touch with your students
Despite the fact that chair yoga classes are not as solemn and thoughtful as most, your students will take their commitment to you and the class very seriously. You probably will have a lot of continuity in the composition of the group. Also, they will often feel like they need to contact you if they will not be in class, especially if they know in advance that they will miss several classes.
Likewise, if they are not in class, they will usually be pleased that you took the time to check up on them. Doing so will also help keep people from drifting away. Of course, pay attention to how they react to having you checking up on them, and if they seemed to be annoyed by that, then back off. I will say that Liz has not had a single case where she felt like she was being a pest.

I can tell you that I have started to exercise several times in my life and I have failed most of them. I have observed that most of us find it very easy to procrastinate on our cardio and this eventually leads to us giving up on our exercise and going back to our old routine. There are several factors that affect this decision and my analysis of my personal case has led me to write this article to help others find the strength and will power to continue with their cardio and make it a life style change. Through the following paragraphs I will discuss some of the problems that make us give up on our exercise and how we can actually eliminate them and make our cardio a life style change.
What is it about exercise that is so difficult? The fact is that when you exercise you are putting your body through a lot of activity that is actually not vital for you. You are making your body go through a lot of physical struggle to do something that it simply wasn't doing before, something that it knows it can continue to do without. For this reason avoiding exercise seems to be a rational thing to do. Why in the world would your body want to go through that stress? Why would it want to go through this activity that seemingly has no purpose? Evidently the positive effects of exercise take a while to show and unless you keep your body through them you will find a very strong mental resistance to continue to exercise. After all, your body evolved to preserve energy and you are asking it to do the total opposite.
However some of the worse problems and "excuses" that come out when doing exercise -specifically cardio - are related with the way in which we carry out the exercise. My brother in law majored in sports and currently coaches a swim team and he gave me some very useful and important advice to make exercise more enjoyable and to help me achieve my long term fitness goals.
The two main things that seem to make most people quit cardio are mainly time and boredom. For most of us, the more time we have to spend to do some exercise the harder it is for us to do it. For example, if doing some spinning means that you have to take a shower, change clothes, go to the gym, then shower, then go back and you end up spending 3 hours to do 1 hour of spinning then you will feel that you are just wasting a lot of time. I decided to make this as efficient as possible and I bought a spinning bike and placed it right next to my bed. So there is actually no excuse regarding time. If you keep your exercise source near you and you keep the activities needed to exercise down to almost zero then you will be able to avoid this time problem and enjoy your exercise a lot more.
The next problem is related to the fact that we don't want to do the same thing over and over again. If you do spinning for 30 days, then you feel bored and you might as well quit unless you find a suitable replacement. The best thing to do here is to look for some variety. You can watch TV while you exercise, you can buy another type of machine, take a jog, etc.. Maintaining variety in exercise is vital and you'll see that by doing this you will be able to keep up with your work outs and avoid quitting to early in the game.
Of course, there are several other problems like "lack of machines", "lack of energy", "lack of money" but even these are easily solved by taking jogs, walking or doing some other cardio that does not require a lot of gear. In the end you need to remember that it is about the goals you want to reach and about being healthier. You need to remember that even though you weren't doing cardio before, this doesn't mean you don't need it. Remembering where you want to be and the changes you want to make is vital to achieve a true routine change. Hopefully with the above tips you will be able to make your exercise easier and join the ranks of people who have achieved to introduce regular cardio into their daily routines.

It happened again, your clothes were ruined by the dryer! Burn holes in your underwear and your other articles of clothing, torn and shredded. What is going on? You dryer might need some fixin' and here's what you will need to replace.
If your clothes are getting ripped, cut or torn, your dryer probably has a felt-like seal at the front and/or rear of the dryer drum that has worn out, is torn or is missing. Your clothes might be getting caught in the gap between the clothes drum and the front or rear of the dryer interior. When a clothes dryer seal wears out, you need to replace it.
Also, check the lint filter or lint trap; it might be worn or showing sharp edges. Your clothes could possible be getting caught on this during the cycle. Be sure to replace this part immediately.
If your clothing comes out marked up, the support parts for the dryer drum might be worn out, thus, throwing the drum off-balances and getting your clothes pinched in between parts of the dryer. Check the glides, rollers, wheels, and seals for wear. Replace the whole set of glides, rollers, or wheels if one or more are bad. You will also want to check the rear support for any play in it. Sometimes the rear drum bearing gets worn out.
If your laundry is coming out smelling smoky, your dryer may have had a small lint fire inside the cabinet, leaving a smoky odor in the clothes drum and on your clothes. Even though there is a lint filter in your dryer, it doesn't catch all the lint. You need to check inside the cabinet at least yearly to look for and clean out any lint build-up. Check the inside cabinet and inner ductwork of your dryer. A dryer vent lint brush will help you reach inside the machine and vent to brush off and remove any built up lint. Also, be sure to clean out the lint trap after every use.
A lint fire is nothing to take lightly; many house fires are caused by lint build up in dryers and their vents. According to this 2005 article from CBS News, 15,000 house fires are caused by dryers every year. Keep your family safe by checking for lint buildup in the cabinet at least yearly. Be sure to check your outside exhaust vent for blockages. Install a smoke alarm near your dryer for added protection. Have a professional appliance repair person check the dryer for damage caused by any lint fires and to cleanout any lint from any pipes connected to the dryer.
Also, don't put items in the dryer such as garage rags stained with motor oil or gasoline, and aprons, dish towels, or napkins stained with cooking oil. Even if the items was washed previously, some residue might still remain and possible cause a combustion.
Other items that aren't meant for the dryer: anything made of rubber or plastic, such as baby diaper pants, bath mats, even foam-padded bras (bras and other delicates should be air-dried anyways to prevent them from bending and losing their shape!)
A signal that your dryer might be becoming clogged with lint, your clothes just aren't coming out dry. Clean your dryer with a link brush or call a professional to have it cleaned for you. You might not need a new dryer, just have it cleaned.
If your clothes are coming out all wrinkled, do not let your clothes sit in the dryer after the cycle has ended - remove the clothes promptly from the dryer and either hang or fold them. Also, dry only one load at a time; don't pack the dryer too full. Do not dry heavy items with light items. Use the permanent press cycle to give clothes a cool down cycle at the end to reduce wrinkling.
Make sure you are also washing the clothes in the correct temperature (water that is too hot can also cause clothes to wrinkle). Be sure to read and follow the care instructions on the clothing item's label for best results.
Finally, if it's a little wrinkled, you can always rewash and dry the clothes again.

A lot of folks wonder whether or not if it makes a difference what order they do their workouts. Such as... am I supposed to do my strength training BEFORE doing cardio exercises? Or is it the other way around?

And here is my take... first of all, you don't really have to do both the resistance training and the cardio training the same time but it is BY FAR the most efficient way to do it. Especially if you are a busy man or woman that has very little time to keep your body in shape.
However, if you have a half an hour each day... sure... you can split up the workouts. Do cardio exercises one day and then the strength training the next day... and so on...
BUT! If you can do it... try to combine the two so you will only have to workout only three days a week (at only forty five minutes each workout!). Sounds like a good deal to you?
I also want to say that you always SHOULD do the resistance training portion of your workout FIRST! Before doing the cardio training. And the reason for that is if you did the cardio first... you are going to be too tired to do the strength and resistance workouts. In short, your workouts won't be optimal. But truth be told... your body looks at both the cardio and strength exercises the same... neither workouts will make you lose more fat.
But you will get better results with shorter workouts if you DON'T do those long, plodding and boring cardio. Instead of steady jogging or walking on the stairmasters... make it an interval cardio workout! So you get much more done in shorter time.
Making these two changes in your workouts will give your fat burning metabolism a big boost... build your strength up to create more muscles and best of all... you will lose more body fat!

Below are some additional guidelines for filtering out the clothes that are just taking up valuable closet space:
"When I Lose Weight" Pieces - Forget it. Just let this item go if it's more than one size smaller than your current size. Why is okay to keep things that are a size smaller? We tend to fluctuate by 5-10 pounds, especially in the warmer months. Focus on replacing that piece with something fabulous that you can wear now.
Hold Time - Now is the time to purge if you've been holding onto something forever. The rule is one year for casual/professional pieces and two years for special occasion items.
Next, outline what you've kept. You can simply write it on paper or do it electronically (a table in Word or in an Excel spreadsheet). List your basic clothing, grouped by colors in the first column. An example is a list of skirts, dresses and pants grouped by browns, blacks, bold colors and prints.
The next column would include all of the items you wear with each piece of the basic clothing. Then the third column outlines the pieces you think might work, but haven't yet worn with the basic clothing. You should also include things you'd like to create additional looks.
