Strength and Conditioning Tips For Training For a Triathlon

Brutal as the triathlon itself, training for a triathlon means that it is high time you up your training to the new level. To train well enough for the triathlon, you should be physically and mentally prepared. As a triathlete, you'll cover 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 mile ride in a bike and 26.2 miles of marathon. Looking at the distance will surely ignite your senses. But will also make you ask, "Can I do it?". Yes you can as long as you undergo the best and safest training to help you become a triathlete and of course, shake the triathlon.

Since you'll be covering long distances of different events it is logical to train the three aspects of the game.

The swimming phase. Like the rest of endurance sports, gradually cover the distance of the maximum mile you'll take on the triathlon. This will help you gradually adapt to the long distance of swimming. Here's what you should know:

• Pierce through the water and do not go against the current. Imagine slipping yourself inside a mailbox.
• Keep your head in parallel with your body to avoid sinking. Breathe by rolling your body altogether to avoid losing your rhythm.
• If you'll be swimming in a suit, train using the suit so that you could adapt to the changes as you wear the suit. You may feel slow while using the suit but youll get the hang of it.

The biking phase. You may want to practice transitioning from swimming to getting on your bike. Here's the guidelines:

2. In training for a triathlon, assess if the race will be on a tough road. If the race will be, then you should also train yourself to bike on a dirt road covering the distance gradually.

The running transition.

New Year's Resolutions - Easier to Break Than a Toothpick

Ahh January 1st. A day for reflection, promises and hangovers. After that last one fades and the brain fog begins to lift, you may find yourself staring deep into the face of the promise you said you were going to keep for yourself.

Perhaps for you, this was the year of the gym. Why not, lots of people do it. In fact gym memberships sky rocket this time of year. Most gyms anticipate this particular promise and throw sales in our faces like small children fling strained peas.

You went out, signed up and bought some really awesome sneakers and perhaps some new workout clothes. Good for you. Perhaps you've even been there a few times. You jumped on the treadmill, then the elliptical and then maybe you even did some weight training. Then, the next day it starts to happen. The effect of sudden strain on your muscles after months or even years of non-movement begins to set in. Rolling over is agonizing, and the idea of getting out of bed, well that thought is too much to bear. So, you take a day off from the gym. That's okay, you don't want to over do it in your first week. Injury is never the way to go.

Sometimes however, that motivation tends to slip. Sure you took that first day off because your muscles were in total revolt and the simplest task, such as breathing brought you pain. But, what happens next is all too familiar. Maybe it doesn't happen in the first week or even the first month, but for so many it does happen.

Life gets in the way. Perhaps you skipped a couple of days because work was just so insane. Or perhaps you had a doctors appointment or maybe one of your kids got sick. All of the sudden, those nights off turn into weeks off, which suddenly turns into a month so on and so forth until suddenly you are back at January 1st again making the same promise you did last year.

Oh what a vicious cycle indeed! Here's the deal, for some reason the human race in general is fantastic at making excuses. And, really let's face it life moves a lot faster and there are so many more things to distract us than there used to be. So how do you get off the cycle that is currently speeding downhill at break neck speed with you holding on for dear life? Simply put, stop making excuses.

Yes, these excuses make perfect sense in your head when you think about them. And indeed, they could be very valid excuses. Not every event in life is planned. What you need to do is set a reasonable schedule for working out. Sure, 6 days a week for 2 hours a day sounds like a good idea but, for a lot of us it just isn't feasible.

So, here's what you do. Take a look at your usual week. Start out with three days. Maybe two of them are on the weekend, and only one during the week, but that is still better than nothing. Then as things progress and you actually start enjoying it try adding a fourth day. Don't be unrealistic about the time you actually have available. If you can't do a full circuit on all of the days, just make sure you leave time for something. For example, you have enough time to do part of your workout, maybe just do half an hour on the treadmill and fifteen on the elliptical and skip the weights.

Long story short, this is up to you. It's your life and your body. The benefits of working out have been measured by a bajillion doctors and independent labs. They really aren't making it up. What you need to do is make the promise to yourself, or if it helps make it to someone else. The end results will be worth it, and hey, if you can tack an extra few years on your life that should more than make up for the time you're actually at the gym.

I was recently talking to a friend about how I like to shop for clothes online. During the course of the conversation, we realised that the two of us had a very different approach to shopping in this way. This came as something of a surprise to me.

I guess I'd always assumed that we all use the Internet in a very similar way when it comes to making purchases. But this is very clearly not the case. Thinking about it, this probably should have been obvious to me before. After all, a whole industry has sprung up around the need to analyse the way in which consumers behave.

So how do you shop the clothes online? Do you even use the Internet to make such purchases? It seems natural to me that people should do. For starters, it seems obvious that it should be cheaper to shop in this way. Why should this be the case?

One reason is because Internet retailers will tend to have considerably lower overheads. This is as a result of the fact that they do not have to maintain expensive premises in high-profile locations. This is in direct contrast to more traditional retailers. Lower overheads should be good news for consumers.

If a retailer is having to spend less money on premises and staff costs, then this should be reflected in lower prices for customers. Although things don't always work out this way, the theory suggests that they should do more often than not.

One frustration that I used to find when shopping in my local high street was that there was a restricted range of shops available to me. Such limitations do not apply when shopping online. This means that we have access to a far greater range of garments.

If I cannot find clothes by a particular designer here in the UK, then I will happily use overseas websites and ask to have products imported. Things have become so much easier.

One area where my own approach to shopping online differed considerably to that of my friend was when it came to making cost savings. I've found that I am almost obsessed with trying to get the best possible deal.

I often find that the best way to do this is by using price comparison websites and discount code directories. These two tools are free to access and have saved me a considerable amount of money over the last few years.

You can use a price comparison tool to identify the cheapest retailers. By then making use of discount codes, you'll find that you can buy many items of clothing for even less money.

The Price of the Home Gym

There is nothing more invigorating or more satisfying than the feeling you get after a good workout. With sweat dripping from hard, genuine calorie burning, and the endorphins coursing through your veins, the feeling of accomplishment is coupled by the knowledge that the last 2 hours were very well spent.

Despite this, there are a number of setbacks when it comes to going off to the local gym.

Any workout buff is more than familiar with the small but numerous hassles that come with going to a public gym. The level of determination that you have for pushing yourself to the limits on that treadmill, or using up all your strength to complete those lifting repetitions slowly and steadily fades as you instead find yourself standing in line waiting to use the first available equipment.

There is also the fact that in reality, only a small percentage of gym members actually use the gym: most people have for themselves a gym membership they pay for regularly, but never really get to use that much. And canceling that membership is somehow unacceptable to them, as it would be a pseudo-symbol of them giving up on the idea of getting into shape.

So given these factors, some might actually be more than dissuaded from putting on their workout clothes and getting into shape. And it is because of cases like these that a number of people consider the logical alternative of simply bringing the gym to their home.

A home gym, in theory, sounds like an excellent idea: the entire workout facility in the comfort and convenience of your own home. You would never have to wait in line to use a piece of equipment, and you could stay on that treadmill for as long as you want, without the restrictions of a time limit.

There is also the consideration that upon building a home gym, that monthly gym membership fee is history.

However, there is the consideration of exactly how much building a home gym would cost. Of course, for it to be effective one must have all the equipment needed for a full body workout; this alone might come a bit heavy in the pocket.

With this, a proper estimated rundown of the materials would be appropriate. Keeping in mind the cost of the gym equipment, a proper budgeting system would do you well if you are considering having your home gym.

First is the usual dumbbell set, the basic needs for any bodybuilder. Practically a staple to any gym, these have been known to be the most fundamental tools for muscle building, and a set would be more than appropriate for your home gym.

A complete set would most probably range somewhere between $300 and $500.

Then, there is the next level: the barbell, or the Olympic bar. These things come in different sizes, each one fitting for either the male or the female. Barbells would probably cost about $120.

Depending on your need for resistance training, you will need a few more pieces of workout equipment, from the $20 weight clips to any of several machines that would probably near the $1000 mark.

Keep in mind that these materials are only meant for resistance training; aerobic exercises, as you may know, use a whole other range of machines that you would have to purchase.

The first and foremost would be the good old reliable treadmill. Known to the one of the most popular cardiovascular exercise machines, the treadmill has been a gym staple, and there is no reason why it shouldn't be found in your own home gym. Even if you were a dedicated weightlifter, getting on the treadmill for half an hour would always do you good.

A good treadmill would probably cost you about $1200.

Then of course, there are the other aerobic exercise equipment, such as the exercise bike ($500-$1000), step machines ($60-$120), the elliptical trainers ($160-$300), and other aerobic necessities.

Other cost considerations would be the floor mats (about $400 for a 12'x12' room), the mirror ($75 for a 4x6), and of course, as with some cases, the payments needed for the extra space where your home gym will go.

In total, a home gym would probably cost you somewhere within the $4000 to $5000 mark.

This cost, however, beats the $85 monthly fee you pay your public gym.

A home gym is definitely a pricey investment, but if used regularly, it will pay off. It is your very own workout space, in your very own home. At this point, it is only about weighing the difference between cost and convenience.

Treat yourself like a business

When it comes to creating your budget, this is a task that no one enjoys as it is mundane and boring right? Creating a budget is the only way to stay on top of your finances. The next part is actually sticking to it.

Sticking to a family budget is as difficult as exercising regularly and eating less of the fatty foods. We all know that exercise and eating correctly are important for maintaining good health just as we know that creating and sticking to a budget is good for our financial health, so why do so few actually do it?

Exercising, eating correctly and budgeting are always found on our new years resolution lists that we promise ourselves we will actually follow this new year, and promises that we always break. There is always an excuse as to why these promises are broken and the tales are interesting and endless.

The four steps to creating a workable budget are,
· Arm your self with all the information you require
· Work out where you are now,
· Decide on the goal you are trying to achieve,
· Determine how you are going to get there.

Arming your self with all the information is a process that is slow and painful, you will be glad that you took the time to do so, as nothing is more effective than sitting down with your shoe box full of receipts, credit card and bank statements and going over them for the last 12 months researching and determining your spending habits. As you go through this exercise break your spending into one of four categories,
- You can do it less often
- You can choose a cheaper option,
- You don't do it at all, or
- You choose not to change your behavior.

You shouldn't make your budget too strict because. if you do the chances of not sticking to it grow considerably.

Tip, as you go through your receipts, bank and credit card statements use different colour highlighters to create a colour coded system to identify where you are spending your money. This will help you plug those leaks. You could use a coded system as below.

· RED = Entertainment,
· BLUE= Mortgage payments
· YELLOW= Household groceries and expenses,
· GREEN=Utilities
· BROWN=Dinners out and coffees

Get the idea? This system works as it lets you identify with a glance where the money is leaking and on what specifically. A small note pad in your pocket is also a great idea so that you can jot down the items you bought that day with its relevant cost so that at the end of the week you can collate the notes and see if you have stayed within your budget. A simple system which works.

Americans and Australians are spending more than they earn, and in Australia alone spending on credit cards has blown out to a massive 40billion dollar debt, that is 40 Billion owed on credit cards alone now that is a very scary figure.

Research shows that the reason people give for getting a credit card is firstly for an emergency and secondly to get a good credit score. Wow there must be compounded emergencies to have a 40 Billion dollar credit card debt in Australia alone!

Before you race off and cut up your current credit cards here is a suggestion. Place your credit card in a jug of water and freeze it, so that now when you get tempted to go to the bargain sale or get something that you are convincing your self that you just must have, you will have to wait till the card thaws out and in that time the urge should have dissipated. Interestingly very few people actually use their credit cards for emergencies.

Resist the urge to pluck a figure out of the air when you are preparing your budget. Go back to the information you have dissected and look at your historical spending and to make it even more simple break it down into two categories,

· Things that you need such as food, shelter, clothes etc and
· Things that you want.

There are certain expenses that you may not be able to do a lot about while there are some that you can. For example review your cable TV subscription. Do you use all of the features and applications that you are currently paying for? If not then change to a lower subscription. Say your current subscription is $100.00, if you change to a $40.00 one this saving of $60.00 can be used to pay down your credit card debt.

Review all your current subscriptions and spending habits and by adjusting as necessary you will find that the savings will pile up without really affecting your current life style. Now that is not so hard is it?

Finally when you are working your budget do it in a time frame that you are comfortable with and can easily manage. Create a weekly and monthly budget allowing for the spikes for items that are billed annually. A method that I have used is taking the yearly items and dividing it by twelve which gives me the monthly amount that I need to budget for. This amount stays in the bank till it is required, earning interest which creates extra income that you currently do not have. That is the power of a well constructed budget.

Washing Clothes in Xieng Khuang

I was blown away when we walked through this Hmong village in Xieng Khuang about four years ago and came across this mother and daughter washing clothes. I don't think I've ever seen a younger girl washing clothes, and with such determination and commitment to the task at hand! The reality is that this really is not that unusual and that because 70-80% of Lao (including ALL ethnic groups) families are living at a subsistence level, children begin working and helping out at a very young age. Growing, finding and eating just enough food to get by is the main task at hand. Hopefully in the next month or so I'm going to post an interview we did of the three young girls singing kwv txhiaj and they talk about only eating meat a couple of times a month. I just hope that people watching some of these video clips get a feel for the real Laos. I think there are many ways to look at a clip like this one, but for me the little girl's determination and commitment to the task at hand say a lot about the Hmong. If that little girl was given a chance for a decent education and the kind of opportunities our students have here in the states, I know she would do extremely well. Let's work to help little girls like this, let's embrace a spirit of reconciliation with the country and people of Laos and extend a helping hand.

CAPTAIN IMPROV

The latest television campaign from Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. Every crew has a captain. Calling all Captains. First aired May 2009. A group of guys at an outdoor bar eye up a couple of cute ladies. They can't figure out how to talk to them, so one guy wings it. He tells his buddy to be an ex bullfighter, ripping off his clothes to reveal a matador uniform. He makes the next dude a romance novel cover model, pulling off his hat so his long blond hair blows in the wind. Then he rips off his shirt to show off his chest. Lastly, he coins himself a plastic surgeon who only does pro-bono burn work. A funny freeze frame names him Captain Improv. They walk in slo motion towards the ladies. A heavy metal guitar riff wails. in the background. The Captain strikes the pose.

Healthy Travel Tips

I spent several years in outside sales, selling mutual funds. At times it was difficult to maintain my health properly as I traveled. It's very easy to get caught up in eating unhealthy meals and be inactive on the road. Don't be this person. As a former business traveler I found my job performance always improved if I was maintaining a healthy life on the road. Listed below are simple, effective tips to maintain your proper health as you travel.


Find fitness friendly hotels - Look for hotels with quality workout equipment. You certainly can get a great workout without using a ton of equipment, but finding a hotel with good equipment helps your motivation.
Increase your exercise knowledge - One of the reasons people don't spend more time exercising during their travels is because they don't know what exercises are available to them. People often run, which is great, but weather or injury may limit your ability to run. There are a plenty of great cardio and body weight exercises that can easily be done in the comfort of a hotel room. You just have to learn them. The link to my website below provides effective cardio and body weight exercises you can perform in a small space.
Increase your nutrition knowledge - You don't need to be a nutritionist, but understanding the positives and negatives of different foods is an important part of living healthy on the road. This will make your food choices significantly easier, if you know what you are doing to your body.
Stay motivated - Write down reasons why you want to be healthier or maintain your health and keep the list close by. This will add to your motivation and keep you from venturing on a "slippery slope" to bad health.
Don't overeat - It's easy, when you are eating out, to overeat. This is one of the biggest causes of obesity in our society. Stop when you are full and if you are at a restaurant ask the server to remove your plate to avoid continuous picking.
Remove half the bun - This is one of my favorites. If you are eating a sandwich, take away half the bread. If you have ever noticed, a lot of places give you a whole lot of bun with your sandwich and only half the bread is generally still sufficient.
Walk when you can - If you are going to a meeting, and it's a mile or less walk there (weather permitting), don't drive. A 1 mile walk at a moderate pace (3 mph) could burn roughly 70-80 calories for a 120lb female and 115-125 calories for a 200lb male.
Pack a lunch - If you are traveling and don't have lunch plans, pack your lunch. This can save you time and money, plus, you'll avoid unhealthy chain restaurants.
Get your sleep - Not getting enough sleep can lead to eating high sugar foods for energy and result in sedentary days because you are so tired. Getting a proper night of sleep (consistently) will do wonders for your health and, if you are a business traveler, your job performance.
Shun the mini bar - Hotel mini bars are tempting and chock full of delicious yet unhealthy snacks. Sometimes people are so hungry they have to eat something. If you are this way, plan ahead and take healthy snacks with you when you travel.
Pack your equipment - This may sound obvious, but have a checklist of items you need to exercise with, such as, gym clothes, shoes, a resistance tube, weights, and anything else.
Enjoy your new surroundings - Finding local parks and recreation areas will help you get away from the confinements of your room and clear your head of stress. Plus, they are fun and can be a great experience.

Just because you travel doesn't mean you can't lead a healthy lifestyle. It just means you may have to think differently. One of my favorite quotes about good health is from Zig Ziglar, who said, "You pay price of bad health; you enjoy the price of good health."
