Safety Precautions For a Kickboxing Workout

Kickboxing is gaining popularity as a high intensity workout for quick weight loss, toning up the body and a self defense technique. I am a kickboxing enthusiast and practice it to keep myself fit and lean. I am writing following safety precautions which you should take if you plan to engage yourself in kickboxing to lose weight or maintain general fitness. These are also true for any other high intensity workout as well.
Warm up your body before any intensive workout. This will help you to avoid strains and pains. You can warm up by doing light aerobics.
Do some stretching exercise before and after a high intensity or high impact workout like kickboxing.
Wear right sized clothes. Avoid either too tight or too lose fitting clothes. Such clothes can restrict free motion in a kickboxing workout.
Wear good running shoes. Good shoes are really important as they will significantly reduce the impact on your knees and joints while kicking and jumping. Don't do kickboxing working bare foot especially on hard or concrete floors.
In case you are a beginner, be careful with your kicks and punches. Don't be too aggressive in the beginning as your might to harm yourself.
Kicking too high or with great intensity may put unnecessary strain on your joints and muscles. Avoid it.
As with any sport or workout, give yourself a few days (may be a week) before you start pushing yourself. Let your body adapt and learn the skills and motions of kickboxing workout.
After your workout you should feel more energetic and ready to go. If you feel really tired or week after the workout, it means that you are over stressing yourself.
Slowly increase your workout intensity over the weeks. Don't aim to be a master boxer on day one.
Don't get dehydrated. Drink sufficient water at the beginning of the workout and sip water if required during the workout.
Relax and let your body cool down for few minutes at the end of workout.
Ensure that your floor is clean and there are no clothes, papers or other objects lying on the floor. You might accidently step on them during the workout and might injure yourself.
Maintain proper balance and proper foot position while kicking and punching
In case you experience joint pains and strains give yourself a rest for couple of days. If it persists please see your physio-therapist or doctor.
In case you suffer from some sort of illness, back or joint pains, complications etc, please discuss with your doctor before engaging yourself in any high intensity workout.
Love your body. Do not abuse it.

Yoga Clothes for Comfort, Functionality - and Let's Not Leave Out Fun!

Yoga clothes should be comfortable and functional. They should allow you to move freely and not distract you from your practice. They should feel good against your skin so they don't cause any irritation.

Ideally, the clothing should be absorbent so that it wicks sweat away from your body. There are few things that feel as uncomfortable as a sticky, clammy body that is moist from perspiration.

I also think they should be attractive and fun to wear. When I do yoga alone in my home, I am willing to wear an old tee shirt and sweats or baggy shorts. When I practice in a class, I am more discriminating in what I choose to wear.

I admit it. I work very hard to keep my body in shape, and when I am with others, I want to show off the efforts of my hard work. I usually choose form fitting pants and a fitted tee shirt. This allows me to see the outline of my body in the mirror so I can maintain good form, and it lets me move without having to fuss with my clothes. They are also flattering to my body, so when I wear them I feel good.

Here are some of the things that you should look for in yoga clothing so that they work well for you and make you feel good about yourself and your practice.

Yoga Pants

There are many types of yoga pants. Some are long and go down to your ankles; others stop just below your knees. Often they are relatively form fitting. These types of pants have the benefit of allowing your instructor to see your alignment so she can make any necessary adjustments to your form.

If you aren't comfortable in pants that are so revealing, you might enjoy wearing loose, cotton trousers. They offer freedom of movement without being too tight.

Whatever pants you choose, make sure that you can bend and move freely in them. Also be sure that there are no bulky ties at the waist that might be uncomfortable when you are lying in a prone position.

Yoga Shorts

I don't know about you, but I find it difficult if not impossible, to relax when I am cold. Bringing a jacket with you gives you an option of covering up during the relaxation period if you are feeling chilly. Feeling warm and comfortable allows you the pleasure of letting your body relax fully.

CORRECTION: The description originally stated that exposed film was to be used, but you actually have to use blank, developed film. A chemical used in the development process is what gives the film it's visible light filtering capabilities. First off my apologies for the very shoddy camera work and even shoddier narration. Secondly, this is merely my own personal findings after conducting several very unscientific tests using esotericsean's method of turning an ordinary camcorder into one that only lets in infrared light, allowing the operator to 'see through' various objects including clothing. The tests speak for themselves and yes, by using this method you can actually see what people are wearing under their clothing, provided that the clothing is relatively clingy, and is a thin fabric. Dark clothing works the best, but I've also gotten great results with all colors, provided that the fabric is thin and clingy. The method: In case you haven't seen EsotericSean's video tutorial, the method is simple. You take any ordinary video camera with night shot capability, and you take a piece of BLANK, DEVELOPED film and put it over the lens. The film filters out all light other than infrared and the night vision disengages the infrared blocker in the camera. Now, if you want to be a little daring and don't care about using the camera normally ever again you can try removing the IR blocker from the camera entirely, although some people have said that it screws up the focus. Exercise Tips: 25 Ways to Stay Motivated

We all know that exercise can be pure magic for the mind, body and soul. But how do you go from a sporadic, on again, off again exerciser to someone for whom exercise is a lifelong habit, as natural and necessary as going to work and eating regular meals?

Here are 25 tips from someone who has been on both sides.

1. The first thing to do is to ask yourself: Why are you exercising? Are you trying to get in shape for an upcoming event? Do you want to lose weight, sleep better, increase your energy, gain strength, add muscle tone and flexibility, or just feel a heightened sense of well being? If the reason you are exercising has anything to do with someone else (for example, your boyfriend says you need to lose weight or get in shape), you need a new reason (and, quite possibly, a new boyfriend).

2. Set goals. Set both a short term goal, to achieve in three to six weeks, and a long term goal, to achieve over the course of a year. Make sure your goals are achievable enough that they are not discouraging, but high enough that you have an incentive to tie your workout shoes each day. It is also important that your goals are specific and directly related to your specific motivation for exercising. For example, my main motivation for exercising is to consistently maintain my brighter mood and the calm, energized feeling that I get only from exercising, so my goal is to work out at least 5 days per week. My other motivation is to gain strength and cardiovascular endurance, so my other goals have to do with how long and how quickly I run.

3. Keep an exercise journal or log. Write down how your exercise is making you feel each day. How is your exercise benefiting your mood, energy levels, quality of sleep, weight, and so on? Do some exercises have more significant effects than others? Chart your progress in regard to your specific goals.

4. Take photos of yourself each month in your workout gear so you have a visual record of your results.

5. Make sure you are working out hard enough to release endorphins. Of course, you will want to talk to a doctor before starting any workout regimen, and you want to make sure that you are exercising at the optimum level for you, your body type, and your fitness level. I find that I am much more likely to continue with an exercise program if each workout releases those endorphins and immediately improves they way I feel.

6. Advertisements for fitness products (especially athletic shoes) can be tremendously motivating. Purchase a fitness magazine and make an inspirational collage of images, advertisements and slogans that speak to you. Post your collage where you will see it each day.

7. Make sure you are using proper technique. You want to avoid injury, above all, so check with a doctor or trainer if you experience any pain, or if you are not sure whether you are doing a particular exercise correctly.

8. Join an online community, such as WeightWatchers.com or Ediets.com, which encourages you to log and track your exercise each day.

9. If you enjoy working out with someone, call a friend to help hold you accountable for those daily workouts.

10. Join a group that combines fitness goals with charity fundraising. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training, for example, provides training to walk or run a whole or half marathon, or to participate in a triathlon or 100 mile bike ride, all while raising money for a good cause.

11. If you prefer to work out alone, give yourself something fun to do while you exercise. Find some good heart pumping music or listen to books on tape. A suspenseful audiobook may be all you need to get on those running shoes each day.

12. Identify the excuses you like to use and have a ready made response. If time is an issue, make sure your workout clothes are ready to go. If you have young children, get a good jogging stroller or set up a babysitting swap with another mom in your neighborhood: you can watch her children while she works out and vice versa.

13. Make sure you have the right gear, which can make all the difference in the comfort level of your workout. A good pair of shoes is essential. And weather resistant clothing or a membership to an indoor gym can help you fight off your own excuses when weather conditions are less than ideal.

14. Once you find an exercise that you particularly enjoy, do a Google search to find out more about any coaches or specialists that may be able to provide inspiration or special training, either through tapes, books, or online resources. 15. Recognize that your will to exercise is going to fluctuate, and exercise anyway. Sometimes it helps if I promise myself that I can stop my workout after 10 minutes if I still want to. At that point, I'm usually feeling so much better that I finish the workout.

16. Place a giant star on your calendar each day to indicate that you completed your workout. These visual rewards can be so motivating.

17. Change your routine as you reach new goals. Add zest to your workout and avoid the exercise plateau by increasing the intensity or the duration of your workout, or by trying a new workout or sport.

18. Hire a trainer. If you are in an exercise rut, consider consulting with a personal trainer for a session or two. You will learn new techniques and find fresh motivation, as well.

19. Try not to take more than one day off at a time. I have found this really important to avoid losing valuable momentum. If I take two days off, it becomes very easy to take another day, and then another day. That means that if your workout is only part of your weekday routine, weave it into your weekend routine, too.

20. Be gentle with yourself. If you miss a workout or two or three, get right back to your regular schedule. You will feel better instantly.

21. Choose an exercise that you are likely to do each day. Some experts say that walking is the best exercise simply because it is something that is easy to do on a continual basis. There is no need for special equipment, and you can do it absolutely anywhere.

22. If you are walking or running, get a good pedometer to help you track your progress.

23. Schedule your daily exercise on your to do list and in your planner. Think of it as simply something you need to do before your head hits the pillow.

24. Give yourself simple rewards. It is generally best if these rewards are not edible, since a food reward can be a tad demoralizing after you have just worked to burn so many calories in a workout. For long term goals, treat yourself to a new pair of athletic shoes or other fitness equipment. For short term goals, consider a new fitness magazine, workout video, or simply fresh flowers for the dining room table.

25. Try to think of exercise as something you do for yourself: a gift you give yourself, a way to stay balanced and focused, and time when you can be alone with your thoughts.

Three Cardiovascular Activities You Can Do For Weight Loss

Probably the most dreadful of all the weight loss activities are cardiovascular exercises. These are those exercises that really get the heart pumping and the body sweating. A good weight loss regimen includes 3 to 4 days of some type of cardiovascular exercise. Here we cover three of them so you can decide which one is right for you. More importantly, which one you will find fun and that you will stick with.

Walking
This is the most popular of all the cardio routines. You do not need to join a gym, buy fancy sneakers or workout clothes to do it and the best part it is free to walk your neighborhood. Slap on a pair of headphones to listen to your favorite music on your iPod and it will make it that more enjoyable. Keep a faster than strolling pace so you can get your heart rate up there. This gets the blood flowing and the lungs working.

Running/Jogging
This exercise really gets the heart pumping. The downside of this is you need to work your way up to jogging for extended lengths of time. Similar to walking you can jog in your neighborhood for free and listen to music. If you have a friend that can join you it makes it all that much better. A good way to stay motivated with jogging is to challenge yourself and increment the amount of time or distance in which you jog and see if you can beat yourself.

Biking
I love to ride a bike. I have an inexpensive "mountain bike" style bicycle that I ride everywhere. Depending on what kind of bike you want to own it can get fairly expensive. If you'd rather not leave the house, your local sporting goods store sells stationary bikes. Again depending on how many bells and whistles you want the price will reflect that. You can get stationary bikes that monitor your heart rate, tell you how many calories you have burned and so much more. The more expensive models will even allow you to program them to compete against the computer. Again, the more bells and whistles that you add, the higher the price will go.

On a final note, just as an added source of information, when you do cardiovascular activity, wear loose, breathable clothing. Stay away from wearing jeans. Give your body a chance to breathe and to sweat.

If you find yourself losing interest in your cardio routine then switch it up. Alternate between one of the three mentioned exercises above. This will keep things fresh, new and challenging.

Looking to Add a New Exercise? Try Sledgehammer Training

Sledgehammer training is not for the faint of heart. Once you read about this routine you might think I'm crazy; my neighbors probably think I'm crazy and if you listen to me your neighbors might think you're crazy too. Regardless, you will be in better shape if you try sledgehammer training.

In the effort to get fit you don't have to just rely on standard types of fitness equipment and traditional methods of training. Dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells are great, but there is other non-traditional equipment that can be used to improve your overall physical fitness level.

Which brings us to the sledgehammer; a large, heavy hammer to be wielded with both hands. While there is not much technique involved, there is the need to exercise caution. Don't go and swing away at something for 20 minutes the first time you try this kind of training. A gradual routine is important to acclimatize your body to the overall demands that sledgehammer training will put on your body.

I wish I could say I thought of this program all by my lonesome, but alas it is not true. For this I give credit to a Mr. Reinhard Engels who has come up with a simplistic yet brilliant approach to the indoor use of the sledgehammer. He has worked out a simple yet effective total body routine that can be performed indoors in a small area in about 15 minutes, with a 10-pound sledgehammer.

Completing Reinhard's "Shovelglove" routine is the prerequisite for embarking on a full-fledged, out-doors, bash-the-heck-out-of-a-tree-stump training program. Once you are ready for this program, check out my website to see a video routine.

And here's a quick note on the concept of "hardcore" as it applies to working out. Hardcore is a state of mind, in that a person is willing to deviate from convention and use all the tools and knowledge available in order to come up with an interesting, fun and effective way to train.

Hardcore isn't going to a gym and struggling and straining and making loud noises in order to do curls or leg extensions or the bench press. Being big or wearing old, ripped, tattered workout clothes don't make someone hardcore. If you're hardcore, you don't train with belts, wrist wraps or spend most of your time on machines.

Don't be intimidated by the concept of hardcore, embrace it.

Once you've spent a month or two with the "Shovelglove" you can venture outside and seek out an old tree stump, log or railroad tie or score an old tire from a local auto repair shop. All you need is a 10-pound sledge, safety goggles (to prevent anything you hit from shooting into your eyes) and the willingness to work hard. This kind of training is great for every part of your body from your fingers to your toes, and especially works on your core. Core training is all the rage these days and nothing will work your core like 20 minutes swinging a sledgehammer.

The first time you head outside, after you warm up with some "Shovelglove" moves, spend only 10 minutes actually hitting something You will be generating quite a bit of force so you don't want to overdo and suffer an injury. Working on terrain, and not on a level gym floor, will force your body to move in ways that you probably aren't used to, which is another reason that you don't want to do too much right off the bat.

Do yourself a favor and take your time, as the best approach is to "sledge" for about 10 minutes at a time three times per week. From here, you can add time to your sessions until you can go for about 25 minutes at the most.

Why Proper Clothing Is So Important In Tai Chi

Tai Chi requires fundamental meditation skills to execute properly. There are a variety of important aspects to your martial arts and exercise workout. Issues to consider in your session include:

Proper exercise clothing

Environment

Ambiance

Disruptions

Some of the experts argue that wearing proper clothing during the exercise session is every bit as essential as the mental preparation before actual session itself. They rationalize that:

Spiritual energy Qi flows from every pore in the body

Tight and inhibitive clothing can severely diminish the flows of energy in your body. This is especially important to those who are starting to learn the skills of the ancient art. Starters tend to have more difficulty in detecting and managing Qi.

This artistic martial art is a moving meditation, tough heavy clothing like jeans and jackets are, so rigid and not as flexible, that it will hinder body movement and encumber the practitioner.

Properties of the right exercise clothing

The proper clothing is soft, light, and supple. For best results the clothes should be:

Soft as not to distract the practitioner

Light as not to inhibit movement

Supple enough to accommodate the postures

Made of cotton, linen, or silk

Linen pants are a favorite choice since linen is thermo-regulating, strong, durable and more resistant to wear and abrasion. Traditional Chinese martial arts masters uses silk since, silk was plentiful in china. Cotton is also an alternative if silk and linen are not easily available. Cotton is cool and is also less expensive.

Colors and Uniforms

The most common color of Tai Chi clothing is black and white, but there are no restrictions to the color of clothing that you wear. If attending a specific school there may be a specific color that is required by students.

There are many other schools that do not require specially designed uniforms. Instead, they use a printed T-shirt as the school uniform. Usually, the shirt is white and the school's logo or Tai Chi symbols are printed on it. Trousers are the student's responsibility.

The right clothing does not define the skill in the art. Any person interested in the art of Tai Chi can try it. It is a really a state of mind and does not require specific clothing. You can practice the meditation in the middle of Sahara wearing only a swimsuit if you wanted to.

The proper exercise clothing only serves to make you comfortable while practicing your art, so getting uncomfortable clothes defeats the purpose. Tai Chi is suppose to help you balance your mind and body so whatever cloths you decide to wear they should not distract you from your meditation experience.

Insanity Workout - Can You Really Lose 20 Pounds Or More In 60 Days With Insanity?

I am sure you have either heard about it or seen the infomercials about the Insanity workout created by trainer and dancer Shaun T, correct? Let's assume your answer is yes and now you are intrigued to find out whether the claims made by the creators of the program are actually true or not. You know what? I don't blame you! I have wasted my time and money paying for products that promised the stars and the moon but the only thing that they made lighter was my wallet, not my belly. Have you had that happen to you?

Let me tell you something, at first I was skeptical as well. I thought that either those people were paid models or simply were made to look thiner with make up or effects, but one day I decided to give it a try, because I was sick and tired of feeling bloated and fat all the time. You know the feeling: your clothes fit horribly, your self confidence is super low all the time and all you want is to feel sexy and don't worry about your belly sticking out of your pants or simply feeling unattractive.

Well, this program is the best in my opinion. It delivers on the promises made by the advertiser as long as you actually follow the plan as indicated. The workout takes 60 days and it is divided in 2 phases. The first phase requires about 40 minutes per workout and phase 2 is maybe 10 minutes longer or so on average. I am not going to lie, these are hard. In the beginning I was feeling like I was going to catch on fire or drop dead in any instant and the only reason why I stuck with it was because even from the first week I saw that it was working.

My clothes fit better, despite being sore from working out I had a lot more energy and the best part was that the pounds were dropping super fast! The worst part were the first 10 or so days. It took me some serious effort to change my mindset and to actually commit to following the plan like it is laid out. This meant to skip my frappuccino in the morning and say no to the bagels or donuts in the office, but once I began seeing the results I got hooked. I felt really strong and empowered because I was doing something for myself that was working, in other words I felt in control! I mean, we all love feeling like we are the masters or our destiny, don't you agree?

Anyway, this workout comes with 10 DVD's, a nutrition plan that will tell you exactly what to do and eat to get the most out of the workouts. And no, this is not some crazy low carb diet or you don't have to buy any special foods. It simply shows you the best foods to eat to increase your metabolism to burn more fat. It also comes with a fitness guide, a wall calendar and online support, which I love by the way because any time I've had a question about a workout, a recipe or I simply wanted to exchange ideas with other people doing the program, all I had to do was get online and ask!

In closing, I would say that if you are interested in trying the Insanity workout but you are not sure whether it's going to work or not, you should try it. I found it pretty fun to do (and I don't liked to work out!). Worst case scenario, you can ask for your money back within 30 days. In other words, try it for a month and if you see that it is not for you, just return it.

Staph Infection Prevention

As some of you may know on my recent trip I acquired a Staph infection, and upon returning I had it reoccur twice.  As a result, I have done a lot of research on the matter, and read plenty of articles.  I decided to assemble all my research in one informative article.  I hope you find it helpful.

What is staph? Staph or staphylococcus is a bacterium that is very common and most forms are harmless. The form that is really becoming a real problem lately is staphylococcus aureus, which can infect the skin. It can live in dry surfaces like mats, pads and gym clothes. However it grows best in moist surfaces like sweaty gi's, gloves, etc. Hot tubs can be a real good breeding ground for Staph. Staph infections can be fatal if untreated and many have had to undergo surgeries to remove infected tissue (trust me you don't want to have to undergo a skin graft or amputation!)

What does it look like? Typically it looks like red bumps, pimples or spider bites. It can also look like an inflamed boil, may ooze puss and can turn into an abscess. Often if is swollen, inflamed, red and painful. If it looks like this and doesn't clear up in two to three days seek treatment from a doctor (or immediately if you develop a fever).

What should I do if I have it? Stop working out and exposing others and go get it checked out. Go to a physician and ask them to culture it. Why culture it you ask? If you have a strain that is resistant to antibiotics, often referred to as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the wrong antibiotic can actually make your condition worse. It kills off your skin's flora (good bacteria), compromising your body's natural ability to fight the infection and creates an ideal environment for the disease to spread. If your doctor advises you that you have MRSA, you may want to ask to be referred to an infectious disease specialist, as some of the strains are very virulent and require very aggressive treatment.

How is it treated? Typically if it is caught early an oral antibiotic and/or antibiotic cream or topical solution will clear it up. For more aggressive strains it may require IV antibiotics and possible surgical remediation.

How can I prevent it? If you suspect someone else has it do not roll or spar with them and advise them to get treatment. Always take a shower after workout and scrub thoroughly with an antimicrobial soap, if a staph outbreak is present in your gym you may want to consider using a surgical scrub such as Hibiclens, which are available over-the-counter.

Keep your gear clean! Wash your workout clothes or gi after every workout. Keep your gym clean! Mats should be wiped down after every workout - you can use a diluted bleach solution or there are commercial products developed specifically for mats that are a little more expensive. Wraps should be washed and gloves and pads should be dried out as quickly as possible.

Using common sense and good hygiene can prevent this disease from getting a foothold in your gym or club.
