Stop Acne Breakouts During Your Work Out

Some great things happen when you start a new fitness regime. You may feel more energized, relaxed and even look better. But one side effect that you may never anticipate from exercising is experiencing acne flare ups. Happily, acne breakouts at the gym are readily preventable.

Acne on the body

Acne mechanica can happen after exposure to athletic equipment and while wearing tight-fitting clothes. Acne mechanica manifests under moist, warm conditions where the skin may also be exposed to friction.

After a typical series of weight room exercises, large pimples may arise on the back and chest areas because these are the places exposed to plastic, moisture-locking gym equipment and friction. Plus, tight clothes and friction can provoke painful buttocks pimples.

Dermatologist Brian B. Adams, MD, MPH, FAAD, who serves as an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Cincinnati, has suggestions to prevent acne mechanica that include:

Changing your workout attire by eliminating tight-fighting clothing and adding more breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics can help prevent acne mechanica

If these preventive measures are not working, your dermatologist can prescribe prescription medications that are effective in treating this type of acne

Acne body washes

Several body acne washes are now available on the market to help control acne mechanica. The active ingredient in most of these washes is salicylic acid. Common dandruff shampoos offer another economical choice for treating body acne because this products sometimes contain salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole or selenium sulphide. These active ingredients remove excess bacteria and allow the skin to remove built-up dead skin cells that could otherwise aggravate acne flare-ups.

Tips to prevent acne mechanica

In the end, you need just a few things to acne-proof your workout:

1. Breathable clothes

2. A towel to cover your exercise machines at the gym and

3. A shower with an antibacterial body wash or dandruff shampoo soon after you exercise

If that does not work, talk to a dermatologist.
