The pulley clothesline hangs off the ceiling and you hoist it up and down as and when you need to use it. In my opinion the best ones will have a wooden frame, in keeping with the traditional style. Make sure the wood is good quality, not cheap and nasty and likely to break and splinter.
The wood also needs to be waterproofed so the damp washing doesn't rot your beautiful clothesline and you can't have the varnish staining your clothes either!
Cast iron ends are also the most beautiful and traditional supports which help to make a real feature of your pulley clothes line.
The hoist system itself needs to be good quality, it will have to work hard, wash after wash, year after year. This can come in cast iron too for the complete Victorian look. The rope that hoists the pulley up and down needs to be of good durable quality.
Preferably the pulley airer or clothes line should have a lovely bow tilt to it, for great authenticity.
Where do you want to put it? In the laundry? The bathroom? Traditionally they went in the kitchen as it was the warmest room in the house, but nowadays, you'll probably prefer not to have your washing hanging near your cooking. Wherever you decide to put it, it is pretty much permanent, you don't want the hassle of moving it, so make sure you choose the right spot first time. They are generally easy to assemble and install.
What size do you need? There are a few options, in different lengths so make sure you get a size that will comfortably hold all your household washing. If big isn't big enough, you can also find accessories called butchers hooks which will allow extra items to be hung and you can get extra rope for different mounting positions.
There is a small range of different shades available, which keep the traditional style but tone in with your interior design. A clothesline is the cheapest and most environmentally friendly way to dry your clothes. The natural heat of your home will gently dry all fabrics and with a traditional pulley styled clothes line your home will look great too!
